Did The Giver Give Its All?

Movie: The Giver
Genre: Fantasy/Science Fiction/Drama
Rating:

The Giver is a movie based on the novel written by Lois Lowry. Jonas, a teenage boy, lives in a black-and-white world where conformity is all they have come to know. People are content, but nothing more. While feeling still remains in their world, emotion does not. The raw passion of love or sadness of grief no longer exists. Jonas graduates into adulthood and is given a one-of-a-kind career. The Giver, who is the sole keeper of all memories, will now pass them on to Jonas.

After experiencing both the good and bad flashbacks, Jonas wants to share them with others. He doesn't agree with the world being exempt from knowledge of the past. Jonas wants the world to change and puts his life in great jeopardy to do so.

While I can't compare the novel to the movie, I thought the movie was wonderful. It moved a bit fast though. When the credits came on, I couldn't help but be shocked that it was actually the end. After the climax of the film, everything zoomed by.

Whether or not you've read Lois Lowry's novel, if you are willing to keep an open-mind, I think you should give The Giver a chance. Science fiction isn't exactly one of my favorite genres, but this science fiction, action-packed, romance-tinted story was executed wonderfully by director Phillip Noyce.
